Mastering, a form of audio post-production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master); the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication or replication).
Mixing is the process of mixing all of the various tracks in a recording to create the best possible version of the music. This is referred to as “the mix.” Mixing can entail some editing, such as selecting the finest parts of each take of a song and even creating musical pieces from scratch. Sometimes there is so much editing that a second stage is formed between tracking and mixing.
